My name is Ryan Rushing (she/her), and I’m a designer and artist based in Massachusetts after living in the Deep South for most of my life.

My Work

I’m very much a generalist, though most of my 17 year long professional career has been designing and building products on the web and leading design teams. I’m also a sculptor, painter, illustrator, signpainter, calligrapher, printmaker, and type designer. You’re going to see a bunch of that on this website because all these disciplines influence each other, and I’m tired of pretending I’m just a web designer for the sake of networking or some job application. If you’re confused, just ask.

Speaking and Workshops

I’m available for speaking engagements, and I’ve previously spoken about my work to a number of organizations including Shopify UX, CreativeMornings, and Texas Women’s University. I’ve led various workshops around printmaking, lettering, branding, and web design, and if you’re interested in having me over for a speaking engagement or to lead a workshop, please reach out! (My most popular workshop is demonstrating how I use Crayola markers for calligraphy and brush script.)

My Obsessions

Typography and letterforms are my designer obsessions, and I could literally talk about letters for hours. I’ll absolutely find a way to focus on typographic detail in all of my work, whether that means using an obscure CSS property to get an exact set of numbers or painting letters with so much distortion that readability is less important than the shape of the letterforms.

Other obsessions include TV, movies, comedy, mythology, mechanical keyboards, tattoos, body modification, your mom, Halloween, my truck, my dogs, my non-traditional family, optimistic nihilism, and just how truly gigantic the universe is.
